It’s all about Live Jazz on a mid-summer’s night tonight. I plan to feel transported to another space and time this evening…love how music can make that happen to a person’s soul.

we miss you dilla

Producer Jay Dee aka J Dilla was a low-key kind of guy even though all he did was make waves. He became known as a major hip-hop prospect by the late 90s and was heavily requested by rappers and hip-hop artists to provide his magic touch to their lyrics. But, his magic wand lost a bit of its spark when he fell ill in 2003, which led to his passing in 2006.

Regardless of the illness, Dilla continued to work both from his home studio and in the hospital while undergoing care. All he used was a portable sound system including a turntable, samplers, and small boxes of vinyl brought in and out from the people that would come and visit him. Luckily for his fans, Dilla continued making music as much as he could – including the foundation of a cool project called “Donuts”. It was supposed to be a simple production beat tape, but “Donuts” evolved into a project almost as unusual as the environment in which it was brought to life. It’s was a hip-hop album without MC’s.
I thank my boyfriend for expanding my musical horizons and for introducing Dilla onto my iPod many years ago because Dilla’s albums of electronic music always have that tinge of a 70s soul mixtape - a real throwback to the raw sound we rarely get the opportunity to hear nowadays.
I hope there’s a lot of good vinyl up in Heaven. When I get there, I’ll be expecting to hear ‘Donuts Vol. 2′.
tonight, let’s play the cello
We’re going out for my girlfriend’s birthday. It’s been a while since all of my friends have been together like this, so needless to say, my camera is gonna be out in full force! We’re heading out to Cello after dinner – this is our little hot spot in London (Ontario, not England).
No line-ups, over 50 martinis to choose from, amazing house/hip-hop/world music playing from the DJ’s turntables, and vibes of the Montreal nightlife always equals to a GREAT night out. Why others don’t choose to make this their destination of choice for the night, is beyond me.
Oh well, more room on the dance floor for me.
what was my life like before 8tracks?
8tracks.com is an online musical carousal. Once you get on, you won’t wanna get off. Endless, beautiful music varying from jazz to world music, trance to classical, and so on are at your fingertips. I’ve made some mixes on 8tracks and its way too much fun and addictive. And the best part – you get the opportunity to hear other people’s appreciation for sound via their mixes.
Perfecto.
the weekend
I had this classic song on my mind at the beginning of this week – and earlier this evening, when I was at my desk working later than usual for a Friday, it certainly became my musical mantra.
I got to get my fix, and fly tonight,
and when the clock strikes 6 on Friday Night
I’m gonna blow it all away
I’m saving all my soul and all my pain
So I can lose control on Saturday
sing it sarah
I’ve always had a soft spot for this song. Sing it Sarah, sing it loud.
